Geards invest heavily at yearling sale 24 / 02 / 2010
PROMINENT Tasmanian thoroughbred racehorse owners Paul and Elizabeth Geard have invested heavily in the industry in recent years and their commitment to the state continued at the 2010 Magic Millions Tasmanian Select Yearling Sale in Launceston yesterday (Tuesday, February 23).
The Geards, who celebrated their biggest win when their three-year-old Geegees Blackflash won the Cadbury Tasmanian Derby last month, emerged from the yearling sale with the top and second top-priced yearlings.
They paid $80,000 for a half-brother to recent Elwick 2YO Stakes winner Radha Rani and $67,500 for Lot 60, a grey colt by Dash For Cash from Silver Barbie that is a half-brother to recent Listed stakes winner Silver Bullion.
Lot 153, a bay colt by Clangalang from Genuine Blonde, produced some frenzied bidding but the Geards positioned their bidding to ensure success.
"We came away with both colts we liked," Paul Geard said.
"We were very pleased to secure the Dash For Cash colt for what we paid but that was early in the sale and we almost opted to forget about waiting for Lot 153 because the sale was long and drawn out and there wasn't a great structure to the sale in terms of where the quality lots were placed in the catalogue."
"But we stayed and we are very happy to have secured the Clangalang colt because he was clearly the pick of the sale," he said.
The Geards' Derby winner Geegees Blackflash is by Clangalang and that was even greater incentive to secure the colt.
Both colts will be trained at Brighton by John Luttrell.
A full brother to quality mare Reunification (West Quest-Entally) was knocked down for $60,000 (Lot 141) to Star Thoroughbreds' director Denise Martin.
Top trainer Gary White will have the responsibility of training a striking colt by Strada from Private Nip that he purchased for $50,000 on behalf of the Lobster & Legends syndicate that also will race Lot 25, a West Quest-Miss Barysh colt that was knocked down to White for $20,000.
The overall result was pleasing for sale organisers with the average sale price around $14,000, up substantially on last year that produced an average of just over $9,000.
The sale boasted buyers from all states and while the pass-in rate was excessive early in the sale it finished in a flurry.
