Hussy takes Vamos in style 26 / 02 / 2010
GALLANT mare I'm A Hussy registered the biggest win of her career when she blitzed a quality field in the $100,000 Vamos Stakes for fillies and mares over 1400 metres at The TOTE Racing Centre in Launceston on Cup day.
With Launceston Cup-winning rider Ben Melham aboard, I'm A Hussy led her rivals a merry chase, leading all the way to score by almost six lengths from Moulin Rouge with Roses For Claire a closing third.
It was a brilliant win and one that co-trainers David and Scott Brunton savoured, with emotional scenes in the mounting yard moments after the mare crossed the finish line.
"It doesn't get much better than this," an elated Scott Brunton said after he had just finished giving one of the mare's owners, Craig Brakey, a bear hug.
"This mare is so courageous. To have gone through what she has and still be able to produce that sort of effort is simply amazing."
"A lot of people deserve a lot of credit for this mare getting back to the race track, let alone winning races like this."
"It's an honour to train this mare and winning races like this make all the effort worthwhile," he said.
I'm A Hussy is owned and raced by Craig Brakey, Leon Perry and Dianne Smith, all from the North-West Coast and Melbourne businessman Gier Osland.
I'm A Hussy is lucky to be alive let alone racing in prestigious Listed races.
She began her career as a two-year-old and after a brilliant debut win when in the care of Elesha Spillane (nee Pilgrim) she was rated a potential champion.
But fate struck a blow when she fractured her pelvis and was given little chance of surviving.
She was off the scene for almost two years.
But through countless hours of nursing the filly back to health, primarily by Craig Brakey's wife Angela, she eventually got to the stage of trialling and that was when the owners opted to send her to the Brunton's who could offer a beach training environment.
The mare returned to the winner's circle in Hobart on January 10 and after finishing out of a place in the weight-for-age Bow Mistress she bounced back with a vengeance to take out the Vamos.
It was the Brunton stable's fourth success in the race having been successful twice with Lekitama and last year with Lady Lynette.
