Jester falls short in height stakes 02 / 03 / 2010

Rock Jester (Craig Newitt) - small but as tough as they come

THE old adage that good things come in small packages certainly applies to lightly-raced three-year-old Rock Jester.

The Dean Wells-trained gelding scored an impressive all-the-way win in a class one handicap over 1100 metres at Spreyton Park in Devonport on Sunday.

But for the gelding's owner Rene Karam, Jock Jester's size prevented him from being sold for a sizeable profit to Singapore for $100,000.

Singapore has a height standard and Rock Jester fell short.

"The horse passed all the vet tests but Singapore won't take any horse that stands less than 15.1 hands and this bloke didn't quite make it," Wells said.

While the owner was disappointed with the sale falling through he has been consoled by the past two efforts of Rock Jester on Tassie soil.

"The horse had a brief stint in Queensland before being sent back to me and I'm very pleased to have him back in the stable," Wells said.

"I expect him to be competitive over more ground, maybe even up to 2000 metres because he's got such a good attitude - he'd run through a brick wall," he said.

Rock Jester put the writing on the wall for last Sunday's win with a luckless third behind Too Many Reds in the Magic Millions 3YO Classic over 1200 metres at The TOTE Racing Centre last Sunday fortnight, in which he was ridden by former Tasmanian jockey Craig Newitt.
